Airport life hacks: ultimate tricks for travelers

Traveling is fun and is a must at the same time. I am a widow/single mother of my 11-year-old son who lives with my parents on the island. I live in the city because of work which traveling is a must for me, to visit him. Not because I feel obliged, but I do love to be with my son.

My secret to parenting my son is to learn any life hacks that will benefit both of us. I’m pretty sure all moms and dads can relate.

I do travel once or twice a month to the island to visit my family, especially my son. I also make sure to spend my holiday season with my son. And as a frequent traveler, I am sharing these airport life hacks that every travel should know.

AVOID WEARING BOOTS

If you don’t feel like removing your shoes at the security control in the airport, avoid wearing boots. Especially those with ties as some airports will make you remove your boots. They ask you to remove it as it might have metal tips or thick soles.

PUT YOUR GADGETS AND LIQUIDS IN AN EASY-ACCESS PLACE

Make sure to put any gadgets as well as the liquids on your flight in an easy-access place. You need to take those things out of your bag and put it in a tray at the security control.

You may not want to open everything to take off your gadgets and liquids from your carry-on luggage. I usually put the gadgets, and liquids in the same carry-on luggage when I don’t have any luggage to check-in.

Remember, liquids with a maximum capacity of 1 liter – and no container may hold more than 100 ml are allowed. Putting liquids all together in a ziplock pouch or purse makes it more organized.

DO THE CHECK-IN ONLINE 24-HOURS BEFORE YOUR FLIGHT

I do my check-in 24 hours before my flight and have my boarding pass printed or saved on my phone. It helps get faster upon luggage check-in and even skip this line when you don’t have any luggage to check-in.

This helps a lot to be all set the night before your flight. It makes life easier especially when you are running late on boarding.

MAKE SURE TO ARRIVE AT THE AIRPORT EARLY

Be at the airport at least 2-hours before the flight, to have enough time for the airport check-in process. It will avoid any rush and makes airport life easier.

AVOID PAYING ANY EXCESS LUGGAGE AT THE AIRPORT COUNTER

Check first the excess luggage prices at the airlines’ website as some airlines charge triple the price at the counter, compared to online. Make sure you have mobile data on your phone and a debit/credit card to pay it online. This is one of the reasons you should come to the airport early.

BRING AN EMPTY BOTTLE WATER

Bringing water to the airport is not allowed but there are water refilling stations at the airport. Having your own empty bottle of water and a refilling station at the airport will save you from thirst.

GO TO THE LEFT LANE AT THE SECURITY CONTROL

Most people are right-handed so usually, they take the right lane. Oops! You might be thinking now and realize that you usually take the right lane too, most of the time. This can save you time as the queue will be shorter compared to the lanes on the right side.

BONUS TIPS

  • Ask for a free upgrade especially if you are traveling alone
  • Never leave your valuable things unattended
  • Make your luggage stand-out. You may put a ribbon or luggage belt, for example.
